How the free builder actually works

Two modes, honestly labeled: a template engine that runs in your browser, and an optional AI writer that talks to exactly one server — ours. Here is what each one does, and what each one costs you.

Free to download on iPhone and Android. The app writes the whole letter with AI — 10 tones, 3 lengths, saved on your device.

This site and the Cover Letter Creator app do the same job — turning a few facts about you and a role into a letter you can send — in three different ways, and each way handles your text differently. You should not have to guess where a job application goes, so here is exactly what happens in each mode.

The template builder: runs entirely in your browser

The generator on the home page and the five tool pages is a template engine written in JavaScript that your browser downloads along with the page. As you type your name, the company, or your experience, the builder assembles the letter from carefully written phrase packs — greetings, openings, body connectors, and sign-offs matched to the tone and length you picked. Press Shuffle and it re-rolls the wording; leave a field empty and the letter shows a bracketed placeholder like [Company].

All of that happens on your machine. Typing, previewing, copying, downloading the .txt file, and printing to PDF make no network requests, and the page sets no cookies and loads no analytics. Watch your browser's network tab while you build if you want to check: nothing is sent.

"Write with real AI": what leaves the browser

Below the preview there is one button that behaves differently — Write with real AI. Press it and the fields you typed, together with your document type, tone, and length choices, are sent over HTTPS to our server, which asks OpenAI's model to write the letter and streams the result back into your preview as it is written. Only the fields you filled in are sent — no account, no email address, nothing else from the page. We use that text to generate your letter and do not store it beyond processing the request.

Free AI generation on the website is limited to a few letters per day — currently three — for each connection. When the day's budget is used up, the button says so plainly and the limit resets on its own. The app works differently: it has no daily wait, and uses a free-to-try-then-premium model instead.

The app: AI writing with a saved profile

Cover Letter Creator for iPhone and Android is the full AI writer. Describe yourself and the role — or save a profile once (name, role, experience, skills, education) and reuse it with a toggle — then choose one of six document types, 10 tones, and three lengths. The letter streams in word by word, and you can regenerate for variations or, with full access, paste the job posting so the letter targets its actual requirements.

Generation works the same way as on the website: the text you provide goes to our server, the model writes the letter, and the result comes back to your phone — which is why the app needs an internet connection to generate. Everything else stays put: your saved profile and your entire letter history live on the device, with no account to create and no cloud copy held by us.

The app is free to download and free to try — one AI generation and one PDF export are included. After that, premium unlocks unlimited generation, variations, job-posting targeting, and quick refinements.
